Photo Color Systems To Be Part of New Data Storage And Imaging Company Named "Imation Corp."
In April, 3M announced that Imation Corp. will be the name of the independent new, publicly
owned data storage and imaging company it will launch in July. Photo Color Systems
will be part of this new exciting enterprise. In addition to Photo Color, Imation will be
comprised of 3M's data storage, medical imaging, printing and publishing systems, and
hardgoods and electronics service and support organizations.
Photo Color Systems will become Photo Products as part of the newly configured
Medical Imaging and Photo Products Division which merges two previously separate
divisions: Photo Color and Medical Imaging Systems. Medical Imaging is the world's leading
supplier of laser imagers for medical diagnostic imaging and participates globally in X-ray
films and other medical product markets. Photo Products is the world's largest manufacturer
of private label color film and single-use cameras.
"Merging these two businesses makes perfect sense for Photo Color and Medical Imaging,"
said Roger Lorenzini, U.S. business director for Photo Products.
"We will be able to take advantage of the synergies between us -- a step that is expected to become increasingly beneficial
to our customers as changes in imaging and information industries accelerate."
Business will be as usual from the perspective of our film product customers including
product lines and service. Distribution channels will continue as is, and
overall, the team at Photo Products will continue to produce quality products at
good margins while providing outstanding service.
Imation Corp. will have sales of $2.25 billion, based on 1995 revenues of the businesses
involved in the new enterprise, placing it high on the list of Fortune 500 companies. The name
Imation is based on the Latin words informare, meaning information, and imaginari
or imagination. Imation's logo -- the Hand of Imagination waving a wand that trails creativity
bits from its tip -- emphasizes our focus on creating innovative customer solutions. •

Your Question Answered

On occasion, I have customers which have cross streaking on their negatives.
What is this and what is the cause?
Cross streaking can occur on 35mm film, both negative and reversal, which has been improperly
rewound after exposure in a manual rewind camera. Most manual rewind cameras have lever arms
which may be turned in either direction which, during the rewind process, should be turned only
in the direction usually indicated on the arm or near it. If the lever is turned the wrong may,
it causes the film to be folded within the cassette. Continued rewinding in this manner causes stress
to be applied over the entire length of the film.
The result is stress lines or, in some cases, emulsion cracking across the film.
The pressure from the stress lines causes a developable image, resulting in cyan, blue and/or
magenta streaks. These will in turn appear on the final prints, (i.e. magenta streaks on the film will result
in green streaks on the prints) and therefore adversely affect the quality of the
photographs. If one of your customers brings in a roll of film that exhibits this problem after
processing, bring it to their attention and have them bring in their camera and show them
what probably occurred when they rewound their film. They will surely appreciate an
explanation of what happened, and how to avoid this problem in the future. •
Tucson High School Teacher Wins PIEA Grand Prize For Photos
Taken On ScotchChrome™ 100 Color Slide Film.
A photo trip to Yosemite National Park resulted in more than spectacular images for a Tucson
high school photography instructor. The images earned Grand Prize in the category
"Portfolios: Faculty or Staff" in the Photo Imaging Education Association (PIEA) 1996
Student-Teacher Photo Exhibit and Competition.
The prize winning portfolio of ten images was submitted by Jerry Halfmann, an instructor
at Tucson Magnet High School and a photography instructor for 19 years. The images were
taken at Yosemite with a Pentax Spotmatic 2A, 28mm Pentax lens and ScotchChrome™ 100
color slide film. The image shown is one from the portfolio and was displayed at the PMA
show this February in Las Vegas. It was exposed at f/11 for 1/60 of a second. "Come visit the
Imation Photo Gallery to see this award winning work". •
